
Across the Midwest, the forecast is always bleak this time of year. And we don't just mean the weather. One of the time-honored traditions of college football's bowl season is the sight of droves of Big Ten snowbirds sitting glumly in their seats as their Buckeyes, Hawkeyes and Golden Gophers get stomped. After flying (or even driving) to California and Florida with their foam fingers, sunscreen and misguided optimism, they pack the local bars, sing the fight song with strangers and have a marvelous time in the days before the big game. "And then you get the crap kicked out of you," says Brian Cook, who runs the popular Michigan site MGoBlog. "It's very disappointing." In the Rose Bowl, Big Ten teams have dropped six straight—tied for its longest Pasadena losing streak ever. The conference has also lost its last six Bowl Championship Series games and is just 13-23 in bowl games since the 2004 season.
