Google Probe Studies China Schools Investigators probing the cyber attacks against Google Inc. and other large U.S. companies have been examining whether computers at educational institutions in China were involved in the attacks, according to a person briefed on the matter. Several people familiar with the probe caution that the origins of the highly sophisticated series of attacks are still unknown and that investigators are still pursuing a number of theories. The New York Times reported that the attacks have been traced to computers at China's Shanghai Jiaotong University and the Lanxiang Vocational School. The investigation into a series of attacks has been underway since December, when Google first noticed that its computer systems had been compromised. The company disclosed the attack in January, saying it resulted in theft of intellectual property, and said it had traced the attack back to China.
