A UKBA source said he feared it was the “thin end of the wedge” which would have a detrimental impact on border security. Under the emergency measures – which managers at airports and ferry ports have been given discretion to use at will – passengers arriving on British and European passports will no longer have the microchip in their travel document scanned by immigration officers. The microchip in a passport holds additional security information, including a digitised version of the holder’s photograph. The additional technology has been introduced in recent years by European countries in a bid to cut levels of passport fraud.[Read more...]

Edwina Currie and Nancy Dell’Olio perform Photo: BBC By Adam Lusher 8:00AM BST 09 Oct 2011 Comments In one corner: Nancy Dell’Olio, the fiery ex-lover of the grey man Sven-Göran Eriksson. In the other: Edwina Currie, the fiery ex-lover of the grey man John Major – who was allegedly “not glamorous enough” for the younger woman to dance alongside. Now, Mrs Currie has insisted there is nothing in the feud; that it is all just for show – a claim not at all undermined by her admission that she hurt herself laughing at Miss Dell’Olio’s disastrous dancing. In the first competitive round the Italian got hopelessly entangled in a feather boa, scored even lower than Mrs Currie’s 17-point cha-cha-cha, and was compared by one judge to “a curtain in a washing machine stuck on spin cycle”. Speaking before she danced last night, and grinning broadly, Mrs Currie said: “I hurt myself laughing. It was one of the funniest pieces of television. Ever.[Read more...]

By Sarah Holt BBC Sport in Suzuka Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel wrapped up the 2011 world title as Jenson Button saw his hopes end despite winning the Japanese Grand Prix.Vettel and Button vied for the lead off the line but the Briton’s McLaren went ahead at the second stop. Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso went on to finish second leaving Vettel, who had harried the Ferrari, in third place. McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton survived a puncture and another clash with Ferrari’s Felipe Massa to finish fifth. It was a fascinating race on Suzuka’s figure-of-eight circuit but it was Vettel who wrote his name into the history books as the youngest double world champion in history aged 24 years and 98 days. The German joins the list of champions, which includes Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost and Damon Hill, who have been crowned in Japan and becomes only the ninth driver to take back-to-back titles. An emotional Vettel thanked his team afterwards, saying: "Thank you so much every single one.[Read more...]

Howley, while impressed with France’s line speed during their shock 19-12 win over England at Eden Park, said confidence was bubbling in the Wales camp. “I thought the French side was pretty efficient, they were clinical and strong on the ball, with good line speed and they put England under enormous pressure and that’s what we expect from them on the weekend. It’s important that the confidence and momentum that we’ve achieved over the last four to five weeks we continue on with that. “We played particularly well and took our chances and we just need to replicate that for next Saturday, but we’re under no illusions as to how good this French side is.[Read more...]
