
In some instances, universities are reporting increases of application in excess of 20 per cent compared to the same time last year. Overall, the increase may run at 10 to 12 per ecnt compared to January 2009. These are early days and no would-be student should be put off applying to university. However both students and universities need a commitment from all political parties that, whoever wins the general election, funding will be provided to ensure that no qualified applicant is turned away in 2010. This year’s increase in applications is no surprise; many are re-applying after failing to secure a place last year and people of all ages are turning to higher education as a means to improve their qualifications in a difficult jobs market.
