Budget to be held on March 24 It will come just weeks ahead of a general election, which is widely expected to held on May 6, and the Chancellor Alistair Darling will be under pressure to outline measures for supporting economic recovery. At the same time, he has to convince financial markets the Government has a credible plan for reducing Britain’s record deficit. In a speech in London on Wednesday, Mr Brown said he had guided Britain through an economic “storm.” The economy is already at the heart of the election campaign, with the Conservatives arguing that the deficit needs tackling to ensure a stable recovery.
